Occasionally we make cutting boards that we call "Frankenboards"

Frankenboard: When making butcher block, the first step is to glue up a large panel. We then cross-cut strips from that panel, turning them on end in sequence and gluing those together to form the final butcher block. We often have extra strips from any given panel. When we have a butcher block formed from strips from more than a single panel, that's a "Frankenboard". Nothing wrong with it, it's just that the look of the grain pattern from one row to the next doesn't necessarily flow seamlessly.

Feet will NOT come standard on this board, but if you order a set we will be happy to install them for you.

You can also order finger grooves, a juice groove and/or engraving at checkout.

Know your wood

Three domestic hardwoods, chosen for the job

Hardness is measured on the Janka scale: the force needed to press a steel ball halfway into the wood. Hard enough to last, gentle enough on your knives.

Janka hardness of the woods The Boardsmith uses
WoodJanka hardnessCharacter
Hard Maple 1450 lbf The hardest of our woods. Very small pores help keep moisture and food out.
Black WalnutThis board 1010 lbf Rich, dark brown heartwood. Like all three, durable and kind to knife edges.
Black Cherry 950 lbf Our softest wood, still hard and durable. Darkens from pinkish brown to a deep reddish brown with light.
